India has taken a major step toward mobilizing private capital for its net-zero goals by releasing a draft climate finance taxonomy. The framework, published by the Ministry of Finance, aims to define what qualifies as a “green” investment—providing clarity for investors, banks and regulators.

Key Details:

  • Comprehensive Coverage: The taxonomy covers renewable energy, energy efficiency, sustainable agriculture, water management, and climate-resilient infrastructure.
  • Alignment with Global Standards: The draft draws on international frameworks by including the EU Taxonomy and recommendations from the International Platform on Sustainable Finance.
  • Stakeholder Input: The government is seeking public feedback before finalizing the taxonomy later this year.

Experts say the move will help channel billions of dollars into climate-friendly projects and support India’s ambition[1] to reach net-zero emissions by 2070.

“This is a critical milestone for India’s sustainable finance ecosystem,” said Priya Shah— a climate finance consultant.
