Water may be the world’s most precious resource, and in 2025, India is making it a top national priority. This year has seen a surge of activity on two fronts: a major government-backed water conservation campaign and a renewed push for water efficiency in industry.
A National Movement: ‘Catch the Rain’ Goes Grassroots
On World Water Day 2025, India launched the sixth edition of its flagship water conservation initiative, “Jal Shakti Abhiyan: Catch the Rain – 2025.” For the first time, the campaign’s national launch took place outside the capital, in Panchkula, Haryana, signaling a shift toward grassroots engagement[1].
The campaign’s focus is on community participation, with more than 10,000 citizens, officials, and water experts attending the launch. The initiative covers 148 districts and emphasizes rainwater harvesting, groundwater recharge, and the restoration of traditional water bodies. Haryana’s chief minister highlighted the state’s success in water-efficient farming and the rejuvenation of local ponds and tanks.
Union Minister C.R. Patil summed up the urgency: “We often speak of saving wealth, but more important is saving water. True water security can only be achieved when every citizen contributes.” [2]
Industry Steps Up: Water Sustainability Conference 2025
Meanwhile, in New Delhi, the Bureau of Water Use Efficiency (BWUE) under the National Water Mission hosted the Water Sustainability Conference 2025[3]. The event brought together government officials, industry leaders, and sustainability experts to discuss how factories and businesses can use less water and recycle more of it.
Key recommendations included:
A Culture of Conservation
Both initiatives underscore a growing recognition: water security is not just a government responsibility-it’s a shared mission. From farmers and factory owners to city dwellers and schoolchildren, everyone has a role to play.
As India’s population and climate pressures grow, experts say these community- and industry-led efforts will be crucial in ensuring water for all— now and in the future.
