The re-election of Donald Trump has sent ripples through the global sustainable finance community, raising questions about the future of climate and ESG investing in the United States. During his first week back in office, President Trump signed executive orders rolling back several climate-related regulations and signaled a renewed focus on fossil fuel development.

Key Concerns:

  • Regulatory Rollbacks: Trump’s administration has begun dismantling ESG disclosure requirements for publicly listed companies, a move that critics say could undermine transparency in financial markets.
  • Federal Investments: The White House is expected to redirect federal funds away from renewable energy and towards oil, gas and coal projects.
  • Global Impact: Experts warn that US backsliding on sustainable finance could slow international progress, especially as the EU and Asia ramp up their own ESG regulations.[1]

Despite these challenges, many US companies and investors say they will stick to their sustainability goals—citing market demand and global supply chain pressures.

“Regardless of who’s in the White House, the business case for sustainable finance remains strong,” said Lisa Goldberg, an ESG fund manager in New York.
