India’s renewable energy sector achieved a historic milestone in FY 2024–25 which adds 29.52 GW of capacity—the highest annual growth to date. This surge brings the nation’s total installed renewable capacity to 220.10 GW— marking significant progress toward its 500 GW non-fossil fuel target by 2030[1]. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) attributed this success to aggressive policy reforms, state-level initiatives and private-sector investments.

Solar Dominance:
Solar energy accounted for 81% of new installations, with 23.83 GW added in FY 2024–25. Key developments include:

  • Utility-Scale Solar: Rajasthan and Gujarat led with 16.5 GW of ground-mounted projects.
  • Rooftop Solar: Residential and commercial systems contributed 17.02 GW— driven by subsidies under the PM-Surya Ghar scheme.
  • Off-Grid Solutions: Rural electrification saw 4.74 GW added, powering 12 million households[2].

Wind Energy Growth:
Wind power installations rose to 4.15 GW, up from 3.25 GW in FY 2023–24. Tamil Nadu and Gujarat remain leaders, utilizing coastal wind corridors.

Challenges Ahead:

  • Land Acquisition: Delays persist in states like Karnataka, where 3 GW of solar projects are stalled.
  • Grid Integration: MNRE plans ₹6,000 crore investments in green energy corridors to address transmission bottlenecks.

Why It Matters:

India’s renewable boom aligns with Prime Minister Modi’s Panchamrit climate pledges, positioning the country as a global clean energy leader. The sector now employs over 1.2 million people— with projections to triple by 2030.
